I had a lot of fun learning how to throw and experimenting with coil building. I was very inspired by Henry Takemoto’s glazing techniques when working on my pitcher. I enjoyed his use of blue and his biomorphic shapes. When It came to throwing I was watching a lot of YouTube videos for inspiration, as well as , watching one of my classmates throw a lot of larger vessels. I found that I really enjoyed the wheel, but appreciated the time and intricacy that went into hand building.

throughout my nature inspired portfolio I knew I wanted to use both hand built and thrown pieces. I really wanted to play with having both elements present in a lot of pieces. I was inspired by cacti and how they’re dangerous but we put them in pots and talk about how cute they are. I created a series of domestic items all in reference to cacti.

I was was looking into images of cacti and found one named the mammillaria dixanthocentron. When I saw it I instantly thought it looked like it had been made through baker’s piping bag! My professor encouraged me to try any technique I wanted and...it worked!

I really enjoy Saxe's ability to maintain functionality while still having his pieces be conceptually charged. I am pleased by the juxtaposition between ornate details and rough stands.
​
This ties in with my cactus project because I am trying to represent something tough and dangerous like a cactus, but show how they're represented as a cute commodity.

I am compelled by Hutchinson's work because of her color palette and delicate details. I, also, think it is very interesting how she has the works displayed on the gridded sticks.

I can see how I can tie this into the work I've done in ceramics class with the piping bag. I think combining the technique of hand built flowers with piping could be very beautiful.

I am compelled by Hanna's work because of his minimal aesthetic. While the vessels feel very simple, they still demand attention. I, also, appreciate the way some of the pieces appear very weightless.

A lot of his work fits into the my current ceramic projects because he does a lot of simple forms that I've been creating in class. It helps me see that all of the cylinder pots I've made can go somewhere.
